Description
After extensive testing in our workshop, we’ve discovered a brilliantly simple solution to a common coffee grinding challenge.
These affordable hopper bellows offer an elegant fix for grind retention – and they couldn’t be simpler to use.
They fit snugly between your existing hopper and lid, no complicated installation required.
But first, let’s tackle the obvious question: what exactly are hopper bellows for?
In our daily testing of various grinders, we’ve noticed a persistent issue: grind retention.
When you first use your grinder each day (whether standalone or built-in), you’ll typically lose a few grams of coffee to what we call “exchanged retention.”
This happens because small amounts of ground coffee get trapped inside the grinder’s mechanisms.
Without enough weight from beans above to push it through, this coffee sits there until your next grinding session.
The practical impact?
That retained coffee becomes your first output the next time you grind – meaning you’re starting with stale grounds.
Plus, if you’ve adjusted your grind settings, you’re mixing different grind sizes.
With Sage machines, we’ve measured about 1.5 grams of exchanged retention.
While this might seem minor, it means roughly 10% of your coffee dose could be either stale or ground to the wrong size – unless you purge the grinder first.
That’s where these clever bellows come in.
A few quick presses after grinding pushes out that retained coffee, solving the problem without wasting beans.
While there are pricier options available (like full hopper replacement bellows, which can be great for single-dosing or reducing grinder height), these simple silicone rings offer outstanding value.
They’re incredibly straightforward yet remarkably effective at doing exactly what you need them to do.
